Dear Columbine Families,
Happy April! Spring is in full bloom, and we are excited for another month of learning and fun activities.
CMAS Testing Begins
As we approach the Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) state testing, we want to ensure that our students feel confident and prepared. CMAS is an important assessment that helps measure student learning and guides instruction to support their growth for students in grades 3rd-5th.
How You Can Help Your Child Prepare: Ensure a Good Night’s Sleep – A well-rested brain is ready to focus!
Provide a Healthy Breakfast – Nutritious meals fuel thinking and concentration.
Encourage a Positive Attitude – Confidence goes a long way in reducing test anxiety.
Arrive On Time – Being punctual helps students start the day stress-free.
Testing will take place April 8th-April 25th. 3rd-5th grades will all have ELA and math assessments and 5th grade will also test in science. Please avoid scheduling appointments during this time to allow your child to do their best.
Kindergarten through 2nd grade will start their end of the year assessments in May.
Big Kahuna Fundraiser
We are trying a new fundraiser this year called Big Kahuna. Students will come home with information on April 2nd. The fundraiser will run April 2-April 15th.
Late Start and No School Days
- Wednesday, April 2nd – Late Start (school starts at 11am)
- Monday, April 28th – Teacher Workday (No School)
Spring Weather Reminders
As the weather warms up, please remind your child to bring a water bottle and wear appropriate clothing for outdoor activities. Also, as it gets warmer, we know clothes tend to get smaller. Please remember that per the SVVSD dress code, clothing must cover traditionally private parts of the body including, but not limited to, the stomach, buttocks, back, and chest.
Thank You for Your Support
Your ongoing support and involvement in our school community are truly appreciated. We look forward to a great month ahead!
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Warm Regards,
Julia Cooper, Principal

Career Day Presenter Request
Columbine Elementary, Rocky Mountain Elementary, and Indian Peaks Elementary will host a Career Day on Wednesday, May 7th. A team of staff members leads this collaborative event from three elementary schools and CENTRALongmont, a Presbyterian Congregation. We are looking for professionals within our community to share with our students the daily activities in your line of work and expose them to various career paths and opportunities.
The Career Fair will be from 11:00 am – 2:30 pm on Wednesday, May 7th, for intermediate students (3rd, 4th, & 5th grades) in the gym at Columbine Elementary, where you would have a table set up for any materials or items you would like to bring to inform our students about your career. Students would be encouraged to come ask questions and interact with you. Students will rotate in and out of the gym from 11:15 am – 2:30 pm. Available for part of that time? Even if you only can come for a portion of the event, we would certainly benefit from your participation and support!
Thank you for your consideration. Please contact Ms. Owens if you have further questions or are willing to donate some of your time to Career Day.

Golden Cougars
Each month, we recognize a class that had the best attendance, behavior, and hard work the previous month. January winners were Ms. Schafer’s class!

STEM Focus
Columbine Elementary is a STEM focus school. STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. We know that the world is changing faster than it ever has due to discovery of new science technology and its applications.
Here at Columbine, we are preparing students for a future where innovation, communication, collaboration, global competency, critical thinking, and problem-solving will be essential.
This month in STEM
Students got to build towers and Ms. Schroeder’s second grade class got to work with pTeach apprentices at the IC to practice coding!

Coming in May
Gifts for promotion
As a school fundraiser, we’ll be selling gift baskets and candy necklaces again this year. More info to come!

Teacher Appreciation
May 5-9: we will be asking families to send nice notes, a flower, and help with a potluck lunch to treat our teachers.
