Columbine News: January 2025

Happy New Year!

Dear Cougar Family-

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a restful and joyful winter break. We are excited to welcome our students back and embark on a wonderful second half of the school year. January is a time for fresh starts, and we’re eager to continue fostering a love of learning and growth in every child.

Celebrating Student Growth

As we transition into the new year, we will focus on helping students set goals for their academic and personal growth. Encourage your child to share their goals with you and celebrate their progress at home. Together, we can inspire a sense of accomplishment and perseverance.

Winter Weather Reminders

Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the colder temperatures, including coats, hats, and gloves. Outdoor recess is an important part of our day, and we want all students to stay warm while enjoying time to play and connect with friends.

Upcoming Events

We return to school on a Tuesday (January 7th). Please note, there is NO late start in January.

  • January 13-17: ACCESS Testing (more info below)
  • January 17: Cafecito
  • January 18: Robotics Tournament at Indian Peaks

Thank You for Your Partnership

We are so grateful for your continued support in making Columbine a special place to learn and grow. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions, concerns, or ideas for how we can further support your child’s success.

Wishing you a bright and fulfilling start to 2025!

Warm regards,
Julia Cooper

ACCESS Testing

ACCESS testing is a standardized assessment used to measure the English language proficiency of students identified as English Language Learners (ELLs) in grades Kindergarten through 12, evaluating their abilities in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and is administered annually to monitor their progress in acquiring academic English; the acronym “ACCESS” stands for “Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State to State” and is administered by the WIDA Consortium.

STEM Focus

Columbine Elementary is a STEM focus school. STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. We know that the world is changing faster than it ever has due to discovery of new science technology and its applications.

Here at Columbine, we are preparing students for a future where innovation, communication, collaboration, global competency, critical thinking, and problem solving will be essential.

This month in STEM, our robotics team participated in a tournament. It was wonderful to see them trouble-shoot as they had fun doing their best!
